Strange as This Weather Has Been, by Ann Pancake

Can't recommend it enough. It's about how the environmental destruction caused by mountaintop removal mining affects the lives and livelihoods of the working class in Appalachia. It's fiction, but fiction that completely humanizes an issue which isn't much thought about or discussed in much of American culture.
